Time’s Ticking Away

Welcome to Friday’s Bitter End! Today is Stacy Green’s Birthday Book Blast. Yep. Come Sunday, Stacy will have to admit that she’s one year older. In celebration, we planned this book blast to let y’all know about some of the wonderful books out there.

Birthday Book Blast

In addition to the books–some of which are on sale–we are giving away a Visa Gift card worth at least $70 (maybe more if we had some last minute joiners). I’ll tell you how to enter to win at the end of this blog post.

All the participants of the book blast are blogging on the topic “Birthdays–Love ’em or Loathe ’em?”

My response:

Time’s Ticking Away

Let me first say I’m not one of those who puts a great deal of emphasis on birthdays…or really any day on which I’m told to be happy or celebrate. The older I get, the more stubborn I get. And about the most random things.

I neither love nor loathe birthdays. They scare the stuffing out of me. Being the morbid soul that I am makes me doubly aware that one more year has passed, that time is shorter than ever.

“Time” by Pink Floyd

The passage of time bothers me because I am a little woman in a big hurry. I want to see it all, do it all, feel it all. I want to accomplish something that makes me feel proud. I want to not be a loser.

The passing years also mean loss, and that frightens me. As a Christian, I am not afraid of death. But I am afraid to lose the ones I love.

The idea that I won’t be able to call my Mom every day or send my Dad a text message when I think something is funny paralyzes me. Once they are gone, it’ll mean for sure life has passed me by.

“Funny How Time Slips Away” by Lyle Lovett and Al Green

As I get older, I’m more careful about the things I say and do. I’m careful because I’ll feel like a jerk if I act like a jerk. I told someone earlier this week that I’d have an easier time facing myself in the mirror if I did things a certain way.

The passing years have instilled in me an urgency to make the most of the time I spend here on planet Earth. In ten years, I want to look back and say this was time I spent wisely and well. I don’t want to feel like I wasted it.

“Wasted on the Way” by Crosby, Still & Nash

And that’s why I’m here, chasing my longest held dream. It’s why I wrote Forever Road. In some ways it’s what Forever Road is about.

So…birthdays. Love ’em or Loathe ’em? Some of both. More of neither.

Birthdays …

  • increase my awareness that the sand is moving through the hourglass faster than ever
  • remind me not to sweat the little stuff
  • inspire me to cherish every second of the good stuff
  • give me one more chance to make things up as I go.
What about you? Tell me where you stand on the “Birthdays: Love ‘Em or Loathe ‘Em?” spectrum.
Please check out the other wonderful writers participating in the Birthday Book Blast…and keep reading to the end for your chance to win the big bucks.
