Celebrity Author Playlists: Get A Little Heart and Souled

Welcome to Wednesday’s Blue Light Special! Today we have a Celebrity Author Playlist. Our guest is Diana Murdock, the author of Again and Souled. Diana will be sharing her playlist for her most recent release, Souled.

Be sure to check out Souled.  Diana is generously running a sale on it to coincide with her appearance today.  The sale will run today (February 20) and tomorrow (February 21).

Without further ado…

Heeeere’s Diana

There was a stretch of time that I had been very secluded and cut off from everyday happenings in the world – not so much by choice, but by circumstance, and it was a welcomed mental vacation.  You see, we had moved from the beach life of Central California to the serene mountains of North Idaho.

Music has always been a big part of my life.  There had always been something playing in the background, but with the remote location of our home in Idaho, nestled in our forested lot, I kept noise to a minimum.  It was the perfect environment to work and write.

In June of 2010, I published my first novel, Again, and started the next novel, Souled.  I had gotten the first draft completed and by the time the boys started school in September, it was time for me to maintain at least background music.  I missed my music.

Within hours of each other, two songs by the same band, Breaking Benjamin, played and sent chills down my back.  Those. Are. The. Ones.  Those are the ones!  They had fit so well with what I had written for Souled, that I tracked down the publisher and received permission to reprint the lyrics in the book.  Those songs were definitely on my soundtrack list.

Souled is divided into two parts:  The first half from Seth’s (the main protagonist) point of view, where I used I Will Not Bow; the second half is from Dani’s (Seth’s girlfriend) point of view, where I used Breath.  I placed the lyrics of each before their respective sections.

So here’s my playlist for Souled:

I Will Not Bow, by Breaking Benjamin:

This song still gives me the chills when I listen to it.  Seth’s strength and resolve are tested when a dark soul enters his body. I felt the entire song mirrors his final acceptance and understanding of what is happening to him and how he is determined to fight the unwelcomed soul to the end.

Watch the end through dying eyes
Now the dark is taking over
Show me where forever dies
Take the fall and run to Heaven
All is lost again
But I’m not giving in

Breath, by Breaking Benjamin:

Meant to reflect Dani’s fears and determination, this is a little less intense, but no less powerful.  Dani sees the darkness in Seth’s eyes and even though she doesn’t yet understand what is causing it, she’s determined to help Seth rid himself of the soul.

I see nothing in your eyes, and the more I see the less I like
Is it over yet, in my head?

I know nothing of your kind, and I won’t reveal your evil mind
Is it over yet? I can’t win

So sacrifice yourself, and let me have what’s left
I know that I can find the fire in your eyes
I’m going all the way, get away, please

Here are some other songs I thought soundtrack-worthy…

That’s Not My Name, The Ting Tings:

In one of the chapters, Seth and Dani are at a school dance.  This is the song I imagined would get Dani pulling Seth out on the dance floor.  I first heard it blasting from the overhead speakers while shopping for clothes for my sons.  Perfect.

Chasing Pavements, Adele:

At that same dance, the music slows and Dani sings the words of this song to Seth. It is definitely a song for young love.

Lights Out, by Breaking Benjamin:

I could hear the soul speaking the words of this song to Seth.  The soul is determined to take over Seth, but Seth’s strength is not what the soul had counted on.

Hopeless, by Breaking Benjamin:

Hopeless is how Seth ends up feeling.  Thinking he could handle the dark soul on his own, but realizing that’s not going to happen.

Now, let’s jump to the end of the story, but I won’t give you any spoilers.  Suffice it to say that as a movie, this song would be perfect for the last couple of minutes… I can see it now:

All American Nightmare, by Hinder:

Pretty much… the saga continues.

And finally, for the sequel…

The Animal, by Disturbed

I really wish I could say more about this but, that would be, like, totally giving it away.

I hope you all enjoyed the music selection for Souled.  Be sure to look for the novella headed to the digital shelves in the next few months.  Not a sequel to Souled, but more of a supplement to it, titled Soulstice.

Thank you, Catie, for inviting me to put my playlist together.  This has been a lot of fun and has totally gotten me jazzed to get back to writing!

Thanks Diana! I enjoyed having you.  You have great taste in music.

Folks, Diana will be around today to talk about her books or anything else that sounds interesting.

Don’t forget Souled is on sale at Amazon for $1.99. Stop by and pick up your copy before the sale ends!
